Koiné Ministry Description(long)

Common Language, Common People, Extraordinary Message

Koiné's humble roots originate in the heartland of America, in a city known for its rich German history, its famous barley and hops, and many festivals - Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  It's here that five unique artists, each with their own talents and abilities, came together in 2003 to put a new twist on traditional, Christian music.  Staring at each other, blankly, with their instruments in one hand and their hymnals in the other, Koiné set about reinventing the way we listen to hymns.

To date, Koiné has toured across 35 states since its inception, producing 5 studio albums and a repertoire of over 250 hymns and liturgical pieces.  They sell their CD’s all over the world in places as far Germany, Australia and Hong Kong.  This year alone, Koiné will play around 200 events at churches, community festivals, grade schools, high schools, and colleges.  This is a full-time ministry for the members of the group, and is supported almost entirely by the generosity of people who come to their events.

The group consists of: Brian Davison - singer, Tracy Fedke - singer, Seth Bauer - piano, Seth Kock - drums, Benj Lawrenz - guitar, and Matt Scott - Bass.

Koiné is a Greek word that means “common.”  Koiné Greek was the language that the New Testament was originally written in.  It was a common language for the common man - everyone could understand it.  The members of Koiné are common people too.  They play common instruments and common hymns that many know and enjoy.  The only extraordinary thing about Koiné and what they do is the message that they proclaim through the music they play, the same message of the Bible - Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world.

The Vine Press Release

Perhaps the band’s most ambitious album to date, THE VINE, is a bit of a musical metamorphosis for the group; experimenting with new instrumentations, more complex compositions, and for the first time, some entirely original material. “People have been asking us for years if we write our own stuff, and our answer has always been, ‘Yes, but we don't play it out much when we travel because people expect familiar hymns,” shares Brian Davison – Lead Vocalist.  “After being encouraged by many of our fans to share those songs on a larger scale, we decided to put two original songs on this next CD.”

From the encouragement to serve others in the driving indie-epic, Lord Jesus, You Have Come in Love, to the promise of a heavenly reunion in the harmonica and guitar driven dirge, I Know of a Sleep, Koiné highlights the full breadth of their musical range. Another first on THE VINE is presented in showcasing the vocal and writing talents of Female Vocalist, Tracy Fedke, with Jesus, Refuge of the Weary.

The Vine also features exciting new arrangements of church favorites like Precious Lord Take My Hand, Go My Children with My Blessing, I am Jesus’ Little Lamb, Thy Strong Word, Christ Is the World's Light, and more.

Koiné is Brian Davision(Lead Vocals), Tracy Fedke(Backing Vocals), Benj Lawrenz(Guitar), Seth Bauer(Piano), Seth Kock(Drums), and Matt Scott(Bass).

Koiné continues to tour, sharing their unique music ministry in churches, schools, and at events throughout North America, and also continues to create and sell worship materials on their website. Koiné has sold over 35,000 copies of their CD’s to date. Their discography includes Koiné (Self-Titled), GesangbuchChurch Bells, Anno Domini, and The Vine, all of which are available for download on iTunes, with CDs available from the band’s website www.koinemusic.com.

Church Bells Press Release

COMMON LANGUAGE, COMMON PEOPLE, EXTRAORDINARY MESSAGE!

Milwaukee-based Christian Band releases its third studio album – Vol. III - Church Bells

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (December 15, 2009) – Let the voices of the saints join in triumphant song as Koiné unleashes its newest catalog of Christian hymns.  In its third homage to the great lyrical art of the past 2000 years Koiné once again manages to make time honored songs spring from the stereo speakers with delight.

Featuring 14 hymns Volume III Church Bells sits at just about 45 minutes long and never looses its momentum.  From its energetic opener “Oh that the Lord Would Guide My Ways” to its moody “My Song is Love Unknown” to its powerfully contemplative “Glory Be to Jesus” this window into the churches past will leave you inspired and ready for more.

“This album has more of a seasonal flavor to it,” says guitarist Benj Lawrenz, “What’s great about the historic church is that when the bells would ring, the faithful knew that what they were about to hear was going to change their lives.  This album has that same power in its lyrics.”

Church Bells is released to a hungry “grass roots” fan base.  With 10,000 copies of their first two albums in circulation with little or no promotion, Koiné expects Volume III Church Bells to meet if not exceed audiences expectations.  “We just documented our music (Volume I- Self-Titled) as type of time capsule for ourselves musically and now we can’t keep up with the demand,” comments singer Brian Davison.  Volume III will try to supply that demand as Koiné prepares to play at least 80 events outside its home church in Milwaukee, WI.  This is quite a feat for an independent or “indie” church band who up to this point has never solicited a show.  “This year we are looking to play as much as possible, going as far west as California and as far east as Washington DC,” says Davison.

Six years ago, the members of Koiné found themselves staring at each other with their instruments in one hand and their hymnals in the other, wondering how this could possible work.  Today, Koiné has released three albums and is set on making more music as long as the demand is there - including an upcoming Christmas Album.  “These songs have power because they are full of truth,” says drummer Seth Kock.  The truth is Koiné is has become a musical force that is sure to inspire for years to come. “Our concerts are almost all free and we have thrived on people’s generosity and album sales,” says Davison, “God has been good to us.”

Gesangbuch Press Release

Koiné Returns with More Music, More Soul, Same Tradition in Volume II - Milwaukee-based contemporary Christian band releases second CD in two years - Milwaukee, Wisconsin (November 1, 2006) - Koiné, the church band from Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, has released its second album, featuring twice the amount of music, but still the same eclectic blend of traditional Lutheran hymns with a modern mix of country, blues and rock and roll.

The album, entitled Volume II, is an extension of their first CD, the self-titled Koiné, which featured 10 songs. Volume II has 16 songs, and over 65 minutes of traditional Lutheran music like you've never heard before. “We really wanted this second CD to show everyone the beauty and potential that lies in our traditional hymns, and to make them hear the words with greater meaning,” said lead singer Brian Davison. “Our music is a reflection of each member's history in the Lutheran church, but also an interesting combination of our own blend of musical talents and interests.” Davison noted that the band is heavily influenced by many of the great legends of many different genres of music, from Garth Brooks and Johnny Cash to Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin, you can hear the unique talents that the five band members bring together to produce a new sound for traditional Lutheran hymns. The band has been well received since releasing their first CD last year, and has toured to churches and other shows through 8 different states over the last year, including an appearance at Lifest, one of the largest gathering of Christian bands in the country. Among the more popular songs on the new Volume II album include This Is My Will, Jesus Priceless Treasure, and Abide With Me.

The band plays about three shows per week, and is also the house band at St. Marcus Lutheran Church on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm, located at 2215 N Palmer Street (on the corner of North Ave. and Palmer St.) near the Riverwest neighborhood. The band has been asked to travel to Ontario and North Carolina in the spring, and is planning a tour of the Western United States in the summer of 2007.
